Trip Report 12/25/99 through 1/7/00

DAY 1

 Saturday December 25, 1999

 Left from Hartford non-stop to San Juan on American Airlines, everything was fine and on time.  The San Juan Airport is a big place but nicely laid out and clean.  We were glad to find our bags and hauled them over to LIAT Air where we were able to get an earlier flight to Beef Island, Tortola.  LIAT is a decent but typically small Caribbean carrier.  Soon come mon, no rush.  The airport at Beef Island is very small but busy with only 1 or 2 people from customs meeting each small commuter size plane.  We took a taxi from Beef Island to The Fort Burt Hotel in Road Town.  It was raining pretty steadily.  The taxi cost $15 for 2 people one way, but the taxi/van driver made sure we were out of the rain before he stopped the taxi and even backed the taxi up next to our room so our luggage didn’t get too wet.  We had a small bottle of rum with us so we got diet cokes from the bar and sat and enjoyed the view from our room #203’s balcony.  Our room had king bed, ceiling fan, remote TV with HBO, fridge and remote control air conditioning.  The Fort Burt sits up on a hill that gives it a great lookout over Road Town Harbor.  It has a very nice lobby, bar reception area with a rounded tile floor room that has doors open on 3 sides to view the harbor area. 

 Their  Their restaurant is open air with a nice view also.  The prices in the BVIs are high and the restaurant at the Fort Burt was no exception.  As it was Christmas night, the town was closed down and only 4 couples were at dinner at the Fort Burt.  Prime Rib with 4 shrimp was $26 and the 1 lb lobster dinner was $19.  Chicken was $17.  Service was good but the quality was only fair.
